It’s no secret that we are huge fans of Emler Swim School of Westwood. Week after week, swim lessons at Emler continue to be Everly’s favorite activity. She’s becoming a great swimmer, and has never been more comfortable in the water. And while it’s fun to watch her smile, laugh and have fun, a big part of the reason we have her in these lessons is for safety.
We spend a significant part of the summer at our neighborhood pool and at the lake. We’re always right there watching her, but we know accidents can happen any time, anywhere, and with anyone. That’s why Emler Swim School is our swim school of choice. Not only do they focus on swimming fundamentals, but every lesson is geared towards teaching children how to survive in the water if something should happen.
A few weeks ago was Boat Safety Week at Emler. During lessons, each of the kids put on a jacket, and get into a large inflatable raft in the pool. Then, they “fall” out of the boat, or the boat tips over, and they swim back to the boat. (Everly LOVED boat week, and couldn’t wait to get home and tell her dad about her boat “tipping over”.

This week at Emler is Clothesline Week, where all kids are asked to come to lessons dressed with clothes and shoes over their swimsuits. Then, at the beginning of the lesson, instructors simulate a fall into the water so that the children can learn how to recover if they fall in while fully dressed in street clothes. This is an important lesson because 66% of drowning victims are found in the water with clothes on.
This week the kids also practiced their “Jump, Turn, Swim” skill. Everly is so close to being able to do this on her own, and she got a ribbon for trying her best.
These and so many other important water safety lessons and skills are taught at Emler, which gives this mamma a little more peace of mind during those summer months that we’re constantly around the water.
Everly will keep up her with her swimming lessons into the fall and winter months, and I just know she’s going to a skillful little mermaid by the time summer 2020 rolls around. I can’t wait to share her progress with you over the coming months!
