Last Saturday my family had the pleasure of attending Elephant and Piggie’s “We are in a Play” at the Coterie Theater in Crown Center. It was such a blast, and my three year old hasn’t stopped talking about it since. This morning on the ride to school, she was still role playing one of the songs with her stuffed penguin.
Elephant and Piggie are two characters my family is very familiar with, from reading their cute book series. I wasn’t sure what to expect from these characters in live theater, but they were just perfect. The play starts out with the most classic Elephant and Piggie plot line, where they have to get ready for Piggie’s first ever party, and Elephant helps Piggie figure out what to wear. The storyline goes a bunch of different directions from there, all of which are fun and entertaining.
About three quarters of the way through the play, the cast does a number called “We’re in a Play!”, where they realize they are on stage and there’s an audience watching live. They interact with the kids and “grown ups” alike, getting everyone moving and shouting. (It was hilarious to look around the room and see all the other “grown-ups” waving their arms in the air and laughing like children!)
This play would be a great summer weekday activity for the kids. Or the whole family can enjoy if you have an open Friday night or weekend day. The play is only an hour, so you could do lunch at Fritz’s before or after, and enjoy the free Clifford interactive display next door, too.
Elephant and Piggie’s “We are in a Play” runs through August 4th. Showtimes are as follows: 11pm and 1pm Tues-Thurs, 11am, 1pm, and 7pm on Fridays, 11am on Saturdays and 2pm on Sundays. You can see the schedule and purchase tickets at thecoterie.org or by calling 816-474-6552. Tickets are $13 for youth and $17 for adults.
