A Note from Your Kansas City Kansas - Leavenworth Publisher

What a Week!

By Melissa Basgall, Macaroni Kid Kansas City Kansas - Leavenworth May 30, 2019

I'm going to make this week's note quick, because we are busy over here!

First, I hope you all enjoyed Memorial Day weekend. We spent time with family on Saturday and Sunday, and then on Monday my husband played a round of golf with my brother while I took Everly downtown for the afternoon. We had such a great time, exploring at Crown Center, visiting Sea Life, and dining at Unforked. We also made a quick stop at the WWI Museum, so I could pay my respects, and talk with Everly about what Memorial Day represents. She's too young to understand, but I figure it's never too early to start teaching her about our nation's history, and about those who have given their lives so that we can enjoy our freedoms. It was a lovely weekend, and much needed respite.

The reason the respite was needed is because our house has been a flood zone. We've had rain water coming in from the roof AND the basement. My husband and I have been mopping up water for what feels like weeks now. Then, with the tornado that came through the other night, we had another torrential downpour in the basement. We were sitting in the basement with a mattress ready to go (we live in Basehor, just a few miles from where the tornado came through), and as soon as the storm passed, we could hear water just DUMPING into the basement. It was pouring in the from window wells, which were about a foot high with water. We filled the baby pool and 3 more 40 gallon tubs, but the water was coming in everywhere. We ended up with about 3 inches of water in the basement, which we're still working to clean up. And, now my living room is filled with all of our basement storage, which we hauled upstairs in record time, before everything got soaked. There is stuff everywhere, and we can barely even get to the door or the stairs...it's  mess. We are so exhausted that even though yesterday was my birthday and we had plans to go out to dinner, we decided to put on sweatpants and order pizza. My 35th birthday is one to remember, or forget, whichever way you want to look at it! All this aside, we are so grateful that our home is still standing, and our hearts go out to those who lost everything with the massive storm this week.

So, that's what's new in my world. I have a few Mother's Day Giveaway items I need to get shipped off, and I will do my best to get those out today. Thanks for your patience as we've been dealing with this madness over here. Have a great week everyone!
