Ft. Leavenworth Mom and Cleaning Expert on how Cleaning = Family Fun!

Spring Cleaning Series with Anna from The Retreat

By Anna Mull, The Retreat on the River March 28, 2019

Getting children involved in cleaning is quite the task most days, but when we can add in a touch of fun it is amazing how much easier spring cleaning can be, and bonus, you get a little more time with your kid! Here are a few of our favorite not-so-traditional tips we use around our home:

  • Turn up the music –
    •  We love to throw on some awesome jams and clean as we dance and sing! It may not be the fastest way to clean, but it sure is the most fun!
  • Make it a friendly competition –
    • Kids love to play games! Create a situation where they are rewarded for their efforts. Ex. “I am setting the timer for 10 minutes. If your task is done correctly in that amount of time you may grab a treat from the jar.”
    • One of our boy’s favorite chores is to clean the baseboards, seriously! I give them a Magic Eraser and a bowl of warm water with a clean cloth. They challenge each other to see who can get the baseboards the cleanest with the erasers. Win for them, win for me!
  • Let the toddlers play too –
    • Our little guy LOVES to play in the Tupperware cabinet. On cleaning days, we let him have some fun too by using the plastic bowls to make towers or sort the different sizes out. It keeps him occupied while the rest of us work, and when we are all done, we let him “help” by putting everything back in the cabinet correctly!
    • Dust, dust, baby! Swiffer dusters are amazing, and toddlers can’t get enough of them! Let them loose in a room where they are not going to damage your prized possessions and give them the green light. So must fun! When the dust disappears their little faces just light up!

Although these tips may seem funny or a little unorthodox, they work! Give it a try with your kiddos some time. I bet next time they’ll even ask to help!
