Beat Bugs in Kansas City at The Coterie!

By Melissa Basgall, Macaroni Kid Kansas City Kansas / Leavenworth May 15, 2019

My daughter and I recently had the pleasure of seeing “Beat Bugs” at the Coterie Theater. I hadn’t been to the Coterie for a show since I was a kid in the 80’s, and it was such an enjoyable experience.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, the Coterie Theater is a children’s theater, located inside Crown Center in downtown Kansas City. The seating is al general admission, and what’s really neat is that the children can sit on the floor right in front of the stage so they get the best possible experience, and the adults can watch from theater style seating a bit further back in the theater. Or, if you’re like me and you have a younger kiddo, you are welcome to have them sit in your lap on the floor, too!

The Beat Bugs performance was adorable and so much fun from top to bottom. The musical is set in the backyard, in and around the strawberry fields. The set was made using balloon decor, which made everything super bright and playful. The cast of “Beat Bugs” was so animated, and truly talented, and my little girl couldn’t stop talking about all her favorite characters after the show. I think what’s neat about this particular show is that not only were the children entertained, but most of the adults in the room were singing along to the songs, since they are all old hits made famous by The Beatles. It was awesome how they incorporated all those good ol’ tunes into a thoughtful and high-spirited children’s musical about saving the strawberry fields from the town stink bug who is trying to put in a pollution plant. Of course, they all come together in the end to work together and save the strawberry fields!

The show lasted exactly 65 minutes, which was the perfect amount of time for my three year old to enjoy it, without needing a potty break or a snack! I highly recommend you go check it out. The show runs through May 19th, click here to get your tickets today!
