6 by 6, Ready to Read Children's Literacy Program

By Melissa Basgall, Macaroni Kid Kansas City Kansas / Leavenworth March 7, 2018

The State Library of Kansas has adopted an amazing program called 6 by 6, created by the Johnson County Library. It's now a statewide childhood literacy program available to every public library in the state of Kansas. The goal of 6 by 6 is to help children develop a certain set of 6 skills by the time the are ready to learn to read. Those skills are:

Have Fun with Books
Notice Print All Around You
Talk, Talk, Talk
Look for Letters Everywhere
Tell Stories About Everything
Take Time to Rhyme

This past weekend, we visited the Basehor Community Library. The library has so much to offer in addition to an amazing selection of books (shout out to Vickey in Children's Services for showing me great books for 3 year olds!).There are so many amazing "stations" for kids. We spent time building a train track, cooking in the play kitchen, learning ABC's on a tablet with Elmo, and finally, picking out a 6 by 6 bag to bring home.

The bag we selected was based around the book "Pete the Cat". We've had such a blast with all the activities, and it was a great activity for last Sunday when we were snowed in.

I highly recommend checking your local KS library to see what 6 by 6 program tools they can make available to your family. Local story times can always be found in the events section on our website at KansasCityKS.MacaroniKid.Com
